The Rules of American Football

Knowing the rules of NFL football is handy for in knowing what bets to place. The game is split into four 15 minute quarters. This allows for a number of Quarter-line and Halftime line bets. Unlike in sports like soccer wherev games can end in a draw, with American football there is a sudden death round to un-tie scores.  The sudden death overtime round in NFL times is 15 minutes long. Each team has 11 players spread across their designated American football positions.

Touchdowns are worth six points and field goals , three. Kicking the ball, through  the post after a touch down is an extra point. A pair of points is given when a player is tackled with the ball in hand while in the end zone. These multiple ways of getting points show that the game of American football has high scoring potential. Therefore NFL predictions for totals bets would have to be higher than a a prediction for a sport like hockey or soccer.

NFL Predictions – American Football Betting Tips

There are loads of NFL predictions which Kiwi gamblers can make. However we will nly focus on the popular NFL bets. We will also explain how these each of these bets work.  The most common NFL wagers are Point spread bets, Moneyline, Parlays, Quarter-Halftime/ Full time bets, Totals and Future bets.

In explaining the various bets we will use the 2017 Superbowl final teams New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons.

NFL Football Point Spread

Sports book set a point spread set to level out the advantage a favourite has over the under dog. The point spread numbers have plus signs for the underdog and minus signs for the favourite.  Spread betting lines are actually fun to play around with once you understand how they work. See the point spread betting section for to understand how the bet works as well as detailed betting tips and strategies.

Football MoneyLine Bet

Moneyline bets are generic to all sports. It’s a simple bet to determine which team will win or lose. Each moneyline bet has odds which will serve to influence how punters bet. Moneyline bets are represent as numbers with a plus or minus sign , as decimals or as fractions. As with point spread bets , moneyline odds with the negative sign are the favourites and the underdogs have the opposite signs. Get a full explanation of moneyline betting here

Totals Bet on NFL Football Games

A totals bet also known as Over/Under bets and represented as (O/U) . The bet is a wager on whether the final total score of the game between two teams will be below or above what the bookmaker has set. This is maybe a safer bet because you don’t have to consider the tricky variables that a point spread bet brings to the betting table. Or the precarious bet of picking an outright winner in say a Superbowl game .

Season Win Totals

The sports book sets out a number of wins it expects  a certain team to have in the season. Bettors can then bet on whether that team will win more (over) than the total the bookie has set or less (under). These bets are made before the season starts however season win totals bets will sometimes be updated half way through the season. Almost like a halftime line bet but for Over/Under totals.

Parlays and Teaser Bets

Parlays  are a combination of multiple unique bets. All predictions have to be accurate for a parlay bet to payout. The risk is huge however the potential payout is why many gamblers always try this wager out. Punters must be advised that the more bets in the parlay wager , the odds of an accurate wager decrease

Futures NFL Predictions

Futures are bets on American Football games that are yet to be played. Usually futures bets are wagered on major events like the Superbowl. Bookmakers even release odds for the next Superbowl a week after the last one is played. It is advisable to wait at least 6 months before placing a futures bet ion a big event like that. The wait gives ypu a chance to see how teams are performing during the season.

Halftime Line Bets

Quarter line bets, half line and halftime line bets are all any bet that is placed for a particular section od the game. Quarter line bets are therefore bets on a quarter of the game. Whereas  the half line bet is on the first half of the game. The second half of the game is bet via halftime line bets. Betting on the second half isjust like betting on a short version of a full NFL game.
